Veneers are thin, specially designed porcelain coverings that are adhered to the front surfaces of teeth to enhance smile appearance. Because they require minimal to no tooth preparation, they are often used to make cosmetic changes to otherwise healthy teeth, such as closing gaps, or to restore contour and shape to worn teeth to create a more youthful appearance.
Veneers are frequently used to correct color discrepancies such as deep staining, or to brighten up natural teeth to match other porcelain restorations. They may also be designed to conceal rotated, undersized, or slightly overlapped teeth to achieve the effect of “instant orthodontics”.
The process usually involves two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated at a dental laboratory. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. In 2-3 weeks the veneers are back from the laboratory, the temporaries are removed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. The laboratory fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic, and are very esthetic.
The advantage of veneers versus crowns is that much less tooth material is removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable.
